Developing a Hunting Load for the Traditions Deer Hunter Flintlock
In this video, we set out to develop an accurate load with our Traditions Deer Hunter Flintlock Muzzleloader. We're doing a classic "ladder test" with this starting at 50 grains and working our way up to 100 grains. Along with accuracy we're also gathering chronograph data using some new production GOEX 3F Powder. This is part of our larger 100-round review and further testing, including ballistic gel and conical testing.
This muzzleloader was sent to me by Traditions to test. Part of my agreement to receive the muzzleloader was that my review would be transparent and honest, they agreed.
Above, I’ve laid out the chronograph data for all the shots taken during this test. I’ll continue to add to this table as we continue gathering data with this model.
After this round of testing, I feel that we can produce a solid group at 80 grains of 3F powder with appropriate power and accuracy for hunting. As stated in the video, I will continue working with this rifle before taking it on a hunt.
I’m enjoying working with this rifle. It has some quirks, as all flintlocks do, but it’s different than some of the other rifles we’ve shot in the past. One thing I’m interested in testing is the 1:48 barrel on this rifle. This should allow us to shoot roundball and conicals out of the same gun. More paper targets are on the way, as well as some penetration tests.
I hope this video has been informative for you. Be sure to check back for our initial review after doing more shooting.
