How to Win History Channel’s Mountain Men: Ultimate Marksman with Eddie Davenport
Today we’re talking with friend of the program Eddie Davenport about his recent adventure to Montana to star in the History Channel’s Mountain Men: Ultimate Marksman. Eddie has won multiple national titles through the N-SSA but this was by far the most intense competition he’s been in.

Eddie was contacted by the production company about the show in early Autumn 2022 and jumped at the chance to compete in a new level of competition. After working this way through several interviews before being flown out to Montana for the filming of the premiere episode. Over the course of several long days of filming, Eddie met new friends, caught up with old ones and tested his skills in a new kind of competition.
While only one of the competitions Eddie was hit with featured a muzzleloader, each of the guns used featured old school cartridges and calibers, making for some neat exposure for the antique arms and muzzleloading community.
As with anything, feedback ranges from loving the show to not being interested. Long time muzzleloading fans have expressed frustration with the episode’s description of a percussion Hawken as a flintlock, but I still contend that getting some exposure for muzzleloading through a network like the History Channel is better than none.
I’m excited to see the next episodes as many more friends will be participating and testing their skills in this new and exciting arena.

“Mountain Men: Ultimate Marksman” tests skilled weapons experts like never before –from using a bowand arrow to hit bullseyes while balancing in a moving river to firing historic rifles through a 12-foot wall of fire. The series incorporates fascinating facts about American history withexplaininghow weapons were made for successful survival for living off the land. Each weekly, one-hour episode brings together four talented competitors to a ranch in Montana as they strive to become the “Ultimate Marksman,”a title achieved only by completing three rounds of precision-based challenges. Each competitor must use a different centuries-old weapon and technique to effectively hit targets. The challenges also present a unique twist requiring competitors to move through the landscape in a way that only mountain men and women would. At the end of the third and final round, the marksman or markswoman with the highest total points earns the coveted title and walks away with a grand prize of $10,000.
