Those in need of percussion caps are beginning to find them at more reasonable prices in Walmart stores this July. First seen via the Blackpowder Maniac on Facebook, number 11 percussion caps from CCI are being added to Muzzleloading Displays at Walmart stores in the midwest and American South, your luck will vary though, we aren’t finding a pattern so far on where and why the caps are coming out. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like this is an “Every Store” restock.

The upside to this is that the CCI Number 11 percussion caps are selling for an affordable $5.62. After last year’s prices of $9.99-$12.99, this is a welcome relief to many. You’ll find the caps in what is left of Walmart’s “Hunting and Outdoors” section as many stores set up their seasonal hunting displays.

Why have cap prices gone down?

It’s hard to say right now, demand could be waining and we could be seeing prices return to normal, but don’t hold your breath. When we spoke to CCI in April, they said they were struggling to meet demand. Several have pointed out that Walmart has “Codes” in their pricing, claiming “.99” at the end of a product price is a regular sale, while “.62” is “closeout” pricing, which could signal Walmart is trying to dump the camps as quickly as possible, but again, we don’t have any concrete confirmation of that and at the rates caps have been selling, it doesn’t make much business sense to stop selling them now.

Where are the caps?

As of now, we have confirmation that caps have been found in Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri and Ohio. If you find caps in your area, let me know so I can help others find them.

When can we expect Muzzleloading Supplies to return?

Based on what we are seeing, I think we are at the beginning of the “Hunting Season restock” of many big-box stores. Each year product enters and leaves stores seasonsally, just as it does for summer fun and Halloween. We normally see powder, bullets, caps and primers come to many stores around this time of year, so if you need supplies, now is the time to get them.

As of now, Triple 7, Pyrodex, and Blackhorn 209 are retuning to shelves. We’re also seeing Federal BOR-LOK bullets, which have been thought to be discontinued, return to shelves. 209 Primers from Federal, both muzzleloading and shotshell, are arriving to stores shelves at typical for the past few years pricing.

As always, try to take what you need and leave some for the other guy. Last year it looked like each store ONLY got 1000-2000 caps. If you need more caps, check with some of the muzzleloading businesses we have listed here.
